Dastangoi at Prithvi Theatre Fest

Team Dastangoi,

as part of the Prithvi Theatre Festival 2013,

presents three tales in the traditional Urdu storytelling form of Dastangoi

Two from `Tilism-e-Hoshruba` where Amar Aiyyaar, the chief trickster & Amir Hamza`s friend, with his disciples foil the mighty Hoshruba Emperor Afrasiyab`s plan to imprison him. He tricks both Afrasiyab`s sorcerers Aazar and Mahtaab Jadoo in disbelieving their own magical powers, and eventually kills them

And a tale of the Partition of the Indian Subcontinent in 1947, Dastan-e-Taqseem-Hind, which brings to the fore the absurdity and the tragedy of this cataclysmic event. The Partition tale will be performed for the first time since its inception six years back at the Prithvi Theatre.

Team Dastangoi presents

Dastan-e-Betaal Pachisi

Betal Pacheesi is one of India's oldest collection of tales of King Vikram trying to capture Betal. This adaptation, revives the beauty of storytelling telling with its seamless mixture of Hindi and Urdu and the syncreticism of the medieval world where it is difficult to separate Hindu from Muslim, Urdu from Hindi and story from instruction.

And

Dastan Qirtaas Jaadoo Ki

Afrasiyab, the Emperor of sorcerers and of the Tilism-e Hoshruba, sends ambassador Qirtas Jadoo to his neighbour Emperor Kaukab Roshan Zameer, the ruler of Tilism-e Noor Afsha, where his arch enemy Amar Aiyyar has taken shelter. Qirtas takes off with great fanfare traversing wondrous regions of the Tilism. Amar's disciples, the Aiyyars shadow Qirtas but he is too powerful a sorcerer to be easily fooled. On the way Qirtas captures Bahar, the powerful sorceress and the object of Afrasiyab's desires. The Aiyyars free her but Qirtas has now crossed over to the neighboring Tilism. Will he manage to kill Amar or will the Aiyyars kill him before that and save their reputation?
