A Rajasthani Folk Tale & A Lost Art Form of Storytelling: Dastan-e-Chouboli

We're attempt a first - marrying a Rajasthani folk tale to a form of Urdu storytelling. And we hope this fusion will be as riveting as the tales from the Tilism-e-Hoshruba.

Mahmood Farooqui presents

In Association with the Old World Culture

A Dastangoi presentation of the great Rajasthani folk story CHOUBOLI
Based on the version created by Vijaydan Detha

Princess Chauboli has vowed that she will only marry a man that can make her speak four times in one night. Seventeen times twenty-four princes have tried and failed and are now rotting in the dungeon grinding fodder for horses. A brave and valiant Thakur, one who shoots 108 arrows through his wife's nose-ring, everyday, day after day, also wants to try his luck. What happens to him? How will Chouboli be won? Containing a story within a story within a story, some of them pan India favorites, Chouboli is a funny, bitter, sarcastic and lyrical take on Indian life.

Dastangoi Baithak

Photograph Courtesy: Dave Besseling

We have instituted a fortnightly Baithak for the art form's practitioners, or those with interest in the art form and a desire to be a practitioner at a future stage. The Baithak will be a forum to discuss ideas about the art form, stories, show work-in-progress to peers, share interesting related info, and just catch up with each other.

The Baithak is not a performance. We're not looking for an audience. So, please be there only if you wish to engage seriously with the art form.

The Dastangoi Baithak will be held every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 7pm to 9pm at Anusha and Mahmood's residence. As it is a private residence, we expect you to RSVP us before coming. Please send a mail to Mahmood at mahmoodfarooqui at yahoo dot com or me at dan dot ayyaar at gmail dot com. You may even send us an sms. Our numbers are given at the bottom of our blog's page.

If in any case we're not having a Baithak on any Thursday, we'll post it on the blog.

Thanks and looking forward to you all next Thursday.
